4 Tips for Telling Someone They Need a Hearing Aid

If you know someone who is experiencing hearing loss, you know it can be a sensitive subject for those afflicted. The stigma of hearing loss carries a lot of implications, including a loss of independence and the seeming inability to enjoy activities they once loved. On top of that, the best solution to combat the problem is wearing a hearing aid, which has its own perceived pitfalls.

So how do you broach the subject in a way that is informative, yet sympathetic to the hesitancy you are likely to encounter? Having helped thousands of customers for over 25 years, we are all too familiar with the speed bumps you may face, and we’re here to help!

Here are 4 tips that are sure to help you on your journey:

Educate yourself prior to the conversation

Would you ask a mechanic how to sew a dress? Would you ask a lawyer how to bake a casserole? The first roadblock you encounter may be “You don’t know what you’re talking about” which is a perfectly reasonable assumption for them to make. To reassure them that you are knowledgeable on the subject, be sure to do some research into hearing loss beforehand. There are a lot of great resources out there, such as Web MD and AARP. It may be helpful to take notes that you can refer to during the conversation. You may also want to have a laptop or tablet nearby so you can look up any questions they have that you are unprepared to answer.

Anticipate the questions and be prepared with the answers

Over the years, we’ve heard every reason you can think of why someone may hesitate to address the problem. “Hearing aids are expensive”. “The problem isn’t that bad”. “I’m not tech-savvy enough for hearing aids”. There are always a million reasons not to do something, and you’re likely to hear a few of them over the course of your conversation. Keep in mind that while you don’t want to invalidate their feelings, it’s important to break the barriers by gently correcting those misconceptions.

Accentuate the positives

Over the course of your research, you are likely to discover some downsides and inconveniences associated with hearing aids, as there are with any medical device. Don’t let that drive the conversation! The positives of restoring their hearing far outweigh the negatives, and you should be armed with the benefits to help paint a picture of how their life can change for the better. Whether it’s being able to hear their grandchildren talk about their day at school or the ability to easily follow the plot of a movie or TV series, they should be able to envision themselves getting back to the activities they love.

Research the best hearing aids on the market

Hopefully, at this point in the conversation you have established that there is a problem. And let’s face it- that’s often the toughest part. Now, it’s time to introduce the solution! Hearing aids should not be a frivolous, impulsive purchase; they should be properly researched and investigated before a decision is made. The good news is whatever the most important criteria is to the patient, Advanced Affordable Hearing has the answer. Why choose between the best technology, the best fit, or the best price?  Our digital, rechargeable hearing aids use the most advanced technological chips to deliver crystal clear sound. And by cutting out retail locations, expensive doctor’s office visits and more, we are able to sell our products at a fraction of the list price.

We know these conversations are not easy to have, and if your friend or loved one is not overly enthusiastic, don’t get discouraged! That is a completely natural reaction, and you should anticipate this being the first of many conversations on the topic. Chances are, as time goes on, they will be more receptive to the idea as they consider all the benefits.
